Background InformationTroubled Asset Relief Program (TARP)TARP is a $780 billion dollar U.S. Government designed bailout program created by the Bush administration and now administered by Timothy Geithner and the Obama Administration. The funds were designated for the bailout of the Nations major financial institutions considered to big to fail. The funds were to prop up and offset the losses in their asset portfolios (bad loans and mortgages) thus allowing them to remain solvent and continue the flow of lending to small, medium and large business. However, the flow of funds to business continues to remain stagnant. Although, the program was specifically design to bailout financial institutions only, under the Obama administration, additional funds were further extended to General Motors, Chrysler Corporation and a host of other select industries considered to big to fail. Today the government has advanced approximately $400 billion dollars of tax payer money and expects to fund an additional $134 Billion through 2011. |
