BOZEMAN - Yesterday's Bozeman meeting of over a dozen leading organizations and individuals involved in Yellowstone buffalo issues produced a new national network called Let Buffalo Roam. The network is dedicated to stopping the slaughter to Yellowstone buffalo this winter. With the generous support of Patagonia and Great Harvest Bread Company, network participants committed to a series of actions, including further litigation, direct action, education and lobbying Congress to address the current crisis.
Monday's meeting comes on the heels of the recent bad news that Federal District Judge Charles Lovell's ruling allows the government to continue killing buffalo that wander out of the Park. Other bad news for buffalo: the announcement by the Montana Department of Livestock of its $15,000 propaganda campaign to improve its bad public image.
"It has become abundantly clear through recent developments that neither the governmental agencies nor the courts are willing to protect Yellowstone's bison," said D.J. Schubert, representative of The Fund For Animals. "The Fund (for Animals) is committed to working with Let Buffalo Roam to stop the slaughter this winter and in the future."
"We hope Patagonia's involvement will help stop the slaughter and motivate other corporations and merchants to get involved, " said Beth Sullivan, manager, The Patagonia Outlet - Dillon.
"This kind of national solidarity is what it will take to force Montana's Governor and the Department of Livestock to stop the killing. A handful of special-interest groups want the rest of us to pay for the annual slaughter of America's last wild, free-roaming buffalo herd. We are outraged at the government's wasteful spending habits," said Nancy Couperus, Chair of the American Reform Party of California.
The following organizations and individuals attended Monday's meeting: Ecology Center, Missoula; Patagonia, Dillon; Montana Ecosystems Defense Council, Bozeman; American Reform Party of California, Los Altos Hills; Fund For Animals, Washington, D.C.; Buffalo Nations, West Yellowstone; Headwaters Group Sierra Club, Bozeman; Cold Mountains Cold Rivers, Missoula; Virginia Ravendal, Wildlife Ecologist, Gardiner.
HISTORY
The California American Reform Party became a member of the National Reform Party Committee (NRPC) on September 29, 1997. The state organization participated as a full voting member in the Schaumburg Convention on the weekend of October 3, 1997. At the convention the American Reform Party was created and the NRPC dissolved.
"We intend, after the Schaumburg NRPC Convention, to aggressively solicit members for our new party," said Carolyn Guillot, former Party Chair. "We have already established a network of reform supporters throughout the state and are confident that we can build membership in our new party."
Ted Muga, the new party's Vice Chair said, "In addition to national issues of political and economic reform, we intend in California to work on election law reform and immigration reform, issues of great concern to Californians."
We are actively building a state organization and encourage those interested to contact us:
